More dog, bug, bear, cat, chicken and Bibb problems.

Bears: More people have been munched on, mauled and killed since August 1st. The reported events were in N.J., Colorado and Pennsylvania.
What about Rego Park? In July we reported that no bears were spotted at Walden Terrace (WTI). Correction! This bear was spotted on the 6th floor of 98-10 63rd Drive. (Thanks to Lucy.)

Landscaping update: In addition to making WTI look beautiful and a source of pride and joy, our landscapers are helping our environment. Bibb lettuce is planted in the grassy area in front of 98-19 64th Ave. We didn’t notice any bunnies yet, but there were squirrels. (That is Bibb lettuce, isn't it?)

Dogs are not permitted at WTI. And they also must be registered, have evidence of “shots” and a lot of other things. In addition, a dog must have permission to live at WTI. In addition, the Screening Committee is not permitted to give permission. In addition, the next Year of the Dog is 2018.
What does this mean? It means if your dog annoys people, you will be fined, and forced to get rid of your dog or be evicted. The House Rules, Screening Committee and Management clearly state (or should have stated) the rules.
This means dogs at WTI are against the rules!
Any resident who is annoyed or offended by barking or dog urine and feces in your hallways, lobbies and on your sidewalks, should contact the Management (Bob Ast and Henry Christ) and/or BOD (Board of Directors) in writing. If you do not get a satisfactory and prompt response, contact us and we will tell you what to do.
Security: The attached photo (center) is WTI’s erstwhile diligent security guard. Rob is an important part of our community. There may also be “undercover” security people wearing disguises to confuse the bad people, aliens and Russian Spies. Note clever disguises on left of lady with cane and can collector on right. Both are ninja security experts.

Shareholder’s Committee: The Shareholder’s Committee has been reborn. If you are part of the Budget or Communications Committees or helping make WTI a better place and want to make your voice heard, contact Rosanne Levy (Board Member) at the WTI management office.

Cruelty to animals (from ASPCA and Veterinary Society NY): Dogs should be “walked” four or more times per day, depending on size and after every meal. Dogs also require a minimum of one hour “unrestrained” exercise twice a day. Dog owners who do not “walk” their dog at least four times a day are cruel.

A chicken was spotted on the terrace of apartment 2G. The chicken was about to be attacked by a cat that was also spotted trying to do immoral things to a squirrel in front of building #7.

A resident cat can be seen in a window of 98-10.

The cat likes to watch people and take naps. Next time you walk past and see the cat, wave.

And what about doorknobs, elevator buttons and bedbugs? Do you know who lives in your building? Are they nice friendly good neighbors? Are they alive?

License: New York State Law (NYC Dog Licensing Law) requires all dogs to be licensed and to have their license renewed each year. New York City Health Code §161.04 requires every dog owner to have a NYC Dog License tag attached to the dog's collar when in public.

Where do roaches and water bugs (Nepomorpha) come from?
Roaches and water bugs are a fact of life for apartment house living in all major cities. They live in basements, walls, ducts, pipes, etc. It is estimated that 14,278,902,335,817 live in New York City. This does not include water bugs, bedbugs and other creepy crawly critters.
How do they get into your apartment?
They come in via pipes, drains, electric conduits, under your door, on your shoes, shopping bags and anyway they can.
If your apartment is kept clean and you have Bugman (WTI’s free exterminator) visit at least once a month and you don’t have a dirty, smelly neighbor, your apartment should be mostly roach and waterbug free. But …. They will get in.
During hot weather, roaches and water bugs like to come out of the basement and other hiding places. . And your apartment has secret entrances for them. See the pictures.

What can you do? Stuff steel wool into any spaces where pipes, drains or ducts enter your apartment. Be careful when you go to the compacter (garbage) chute. If dirty people on your floor leave garbage, tell management and tell them they are inconsiderate bad people. CALL BUGMAN!

Sidewalks
The sidewalks in front of our buildings are part of our homes. The porters employed by WTI do a pretty good job of cleaning the sidewalks each day. Sadly, some people drop cigarette butts or trash. These are people who don’t know better or are simply inconsiderate slobs. If you see this happen, ask them to pick up their litter, call the WTI Office and yell SLOB.

Also …. Most residents don’t urinate on the sidewalks. They know better. Dogs don’t know better. Any dog owner that allows their dog to urinate on the sidewalk is a bad person and doing something illegal. Perhaps, the dog owners enjoy walking on urine? NYC has “pooper-scooper” and “curb” laws.
Tell the dog owners “curb” their dog, call the WTI Office or go to their apartment and pee on their floors.

Bears
There have been a number of bear attacks recently. A woman in Montana and and one in New Jersey was killed and several people have had their arms, legs and heads munched on. There have been no reports of any attacks at WTI.

Bears are attracted by garbage and we have a lot of garbage.
If you do encounter a bear, experts advise climb a tree, bang pots together to make noise, lay down and “play dead” or call the WTI Office.

Spies and Pigeons and Bugs (again)

Russian Spies at Walden Terrace?

The FBI and CIA arrested and deported 10 Russian Spies. Some lived in New York and some may have lived in WTI (Walden Terrace). Some may be your neighbors. Are there more? Most “experts” suspect that for each spy caught, there are at least twenty times more who are undiscovered.



WTI has many suspicious people and a lot speak Russian. The following people were seen in building #6.

There is no reason to suspect that any of these people are Russian Spies. But … It is good to be alert. If you do see someone suspicious, call the FBI (800) 225-5324. There may a reward.

Re: Pigeon Infestation.

You probably saw the Notice posted in our lobbies about the “Pigeon Infestation”. Pigeon infestation is worse than Russian Spies. A lot of people hate and complain about pigeons and want them destroyed. It is illegal to shoot, stomp on, crush, strangle, squash or poison pigeons in New York City limits. (Nobody will tell.) Remember the 4 S’s (Stomp, Squash, Strangle and Shoot).

Feeding pigeons is bad. It attracts more pigeons, most are overweight and some can hardly fly.

Regarding pigeons in your apartment; Some people eat squab (which is actually a pigeon) others like pigeon soup and some keep pigeons for religious or sexual reasons. Raising pigeons in your apartment is illegal and will result in fines. Don’t do it!

Pigeons carry Histoplasmosis, Cryptococcosis and Psittacosis in addition to secret messages. Recipies for making Pigeon Soup or Pigeon Pot Pie can be found at the Rego Park Library.

More on bugs … Alice F. posted the following;
“I live at the first building at Walden Terrace, and I have to say I am disgusted by it. Since I moved in I have constantly called the management office for a weekly extermination, and every week I see my constant companions, the waterbug and roach. I don't know what type of medicine the exterminators are putting on these bugs, but these darn suckers keep coming back to the life of the party. I shouldn't put the blame on the exterminators, since they are not the owners of the complex. We keep on getting increases on our maintenance, for things that make no sense, while they should be looking at the filth of what us as shareholders are living in.”

For those with bug problems like Alice F, notify the office in writing. Make sure your apartment is treated. The source of roaches, water bugs and other creepy-crawly vermin and varmints may be water pipes or electric outlets, or nests in your apartment or dirty-smelly neighbors. Anonymous notes?

Thermostats Plumbing and Dirtbags

Is your apartment sometimes too hot or too cold? Do you sometimes shiver and turn blue? Or get drenched in sweat? Do you want temperature control?

When it's hot, and if you have an air conditioner, turn it on. If the electricity works (Will they ever fix the electrical system?) you will get cool.

What about when it's cold? What about when your baby and cat are freezing and your nose is running and you are turning blue? Or, what about when in the middle of the Winter when it's freezing outside and your apartment is like a steam bath? You probably have radiators that hiss and gurgle and make strange sounds. The radiators are supposed to deliver heat.

Calling the WTI Office to complain will not help. They will tell you they have to heat the entire building and they can't regulate the heat for each apartment.

What can you do? Do you have a thermostat? Get a thermostat! A thermostat is used to regulate heat. You can install a thermostat in your bedroom. Most thermostats have timing devices to change the temperature at different times during the day.

*Note- The thermostat may not work because it cannot be hooked to the boilers or radiators.

Plumbing alert! Building #11 (98-19 64th Ave) had all the water shut off last week. The problem was a bad pipe. Luckily it was repaired in less than one day. Residents should be prepared. Lack of drinking, washing and toilet water can be annoying and a health hazard.

Toilets won't work? That's bad.

For emergencies! You should keep several jugs of water and a 100 lb. bag of kitty-litter (with a suitable container) in your apartment.

Bad people alert! Most people at WTI are nice. Sadly, there are also some BAD people. The BAD DIRTY people have been throwing garbage, cigarette butts and other rubbish out their windows or off their terraces. If you see them do it, please tell them to stop and please contact the WTI Office.

Q: How much space does an orange juice container (1/2 gal.) occupy?

A: 122 cubic inches.



Q: If you empty the container, squash the sides and stomp on it, how much volume will it occupy? A: 1.92 cubic inches. It takes up less space. That is a 98.5% reduction. One reason we have mountains of garbage piled up on our sidewalks on garbage collection day is we don't ccompact our garbage.

Things you should know about garbage;

Every year we fill enough garbage trucks to form a line that would stretch from the earth, halfway to the moon. Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour and throw away 570 diapers per second. That's 49 million diapers per day. Why can't babies be trained to use kitty litter? July is National Garbage Month. Be nice gto your Garbage man. Wave. Say, "Hello! and You smell nice." Wave when you see a garbage truck.

Playgrounds! If you don't like garbage, you can go to a park. We have a Real Good Park on 99th Street and 62nd. (only three blocks away). Guess what the name is.

Animals at WTI 6/14/2010

Residents keep animals in their apartments. Some of the animals are pets. They include dogs, cats, assorted birds, snakes, chickens, mongooses, gerbils, hamsters and reportedly one dwarf iguana.

A well known nice doggie is a golden lab named Goldie. Goldie can usually be found on the steps of 98-26 64th Avenue. Next time you see Goldie, say, "Woof, woof".

WTI Neighborhood Buildings closing:

The Lefrak Offices Buildings on Queens Blvd are closing. They will become either Co-ops, Condos or Rental properties.

You probably noticed the growing number of empty stores and closed businesses in Rego Park. The only industry that seems to thrive in Rego Park is Medicaid Fraud.

June is Bug Time! The first visitors are usually flys, followed by mosquitoes and then all kinds of six-legged critters including the yucky roach.

Bug Stuff: You probably got a notice that you are required to have the exterminator come to your apatment 2x per year. This is a free (to you) service provided by the 'good folks' at WTI. Bug Man (the exterminator) will not only bug proof your apartment, but will tell you great stories. He is available on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Call the Office to make an appointment.

Beware! Be alert for cousin Harold. He knocks on doors and asks for contributions for the NSBP (National Society of Bug People). You can spot him by his cockroach costume.
